BONUS VIDEO: Why Humans Need Community | Sebastian Junger
Here's an important dose of unity after a divisive week
I think you’re really going to enjoy this discussion folks…
Today's interview is a special one, and a continuation of Thoughtful Money's exploration of other important forms of wealth beyond money.
As those who live to be 100 years old tell us, true wealth, the things that really matter in life, are a function of the following three things: fulfilling relationships, purpose and health.
Today's discussion will deliver hard on those first two, explaining how humans are evolutionarily wired for meaningful interaction with other humans, oftentimes in pursuit of a greater societal good.
When we do this, we are truly "alive" in the way nature created us to be.
So perhaps the modern epidemic of loneliness, anxiety, depression and demoralization is a predictable outcome of today's cultural dominance of the virtual, the partisan, and the superficial.
To help us better understand our evolutionary need for tribal connection and thereby our path towards authentic living, we have the great privilege of being joined today by National Magazine & Peabody Award-winning author, Sebastian Junger.
You may know him from his book The Perfect Storm which became a Hollywood movie featuring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg & Diane Lane. He has also written a number of other best-sellers including Fire, War, Tribe, Freedom and most recently In My Time of Dying.
After a week that has left emotions raw regarding our national differences, I hope you find this discussion with Sebastian a healing and unifying one that inspires you to develop closer ties with the people around you.

I will get to this tomorrow, but wanted to drop a thought a propos of the ‘feelings being raw this week’. I was definitely team Harris, but, for me, a win in electoral college and popular vote feels like a clean win, a clear expression of voter will. Sure, probably close to 70 million (when all are counted) voted for Harris. But that’s how it goes, right? Democracy works that way and I can definitely live with that. I cannot spend another four years being outraged by every outraged story reported by MSM. So, here’s my approach: let’s see. Maybe shift the bias and treat this as an experiment. A second Trump term is the hypothesis of the majority. Count me curious to figure out all the things that are going to happen as a result.
